WMHS starts cyber security class

U.S. elections. U.S. power grids. City of Atlanta. Baltimore’s 911 system. MyFitnessPal. Equifax. Uber. Yahoo. 

What do all of these have in common? They’ve been targets of major cyber attacks in the past year-and-a-half. Those are just the big ones in the United States, according to the Center for Strategic International Studies, a nonprofit, bipartisan research group in Washington, D.C. The list is outrageously long for international cyber incidents since just January 2017.

It makes you wonder, how safe is your data online?

William Monroe High School students will find out this year with the new cyber security class—with Jess Stafford at the helm.

So what is cyber security?

“It is a massive umbrella because it encompasses so many things,” Stafford said. “This class is focusing on the fundamentals of it so defining what it is—which is basically protecting the average human from cyber attacks—so countering criminal activity to be completely honest with you.
