Rebadge universities to curb cyber threat, ministers told

Universities should be designated “operators of essential services”, a technology company has said after Irish colleges were linked with Chinese institutions linked to cyberattacks.

Operators of essential services are businesses or public bodies with important roles in healthcare, transport, energy, banking, digital infrastructure or water supply. Under EU rules they must take appropriate security measures and notify relevant national authorities about serious cyber incidents.

The Sunday Times reported last weekend that the government was funding partnerships between Irish universities and Chinese counterparts that have been linked to espionage and cyberattacks. Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and University College Cork are involved. Some projects involve drone technology, which can have military uses.
