Government cybersecurity ‘is woeful’

The government is facing calls to give more resources to the state’s cybersecurity watchdog after several Irish websites were targeted on Sunday.

The websites of government departments and agencies were compromised by hackers as part of a breach that forced users across the world to mine cryptocurrencies for the benefit of criminals.

Computers of internet users visiting a number of government agencies and bodies were forced to run software that mines, or creates, a cryptocurrency similar to bitcoin.

The HSE, Department of Agriculture, houses of the Oireachtas and several local authorities were among those targeted.
